There’s a marijuana breathalyser on the way

JOE

An Oakland company is working with scientists from the University of California to develop a breathalyser for marijuana.

Hound Labs Inc’s new device will also double up as a test for alcohol, and the company claims that it has found an accurate way to measure THC – the psychoactive component in cannabis – within one or two blows.

The idea of the whole thing is to replace costly urine and blood tests, which take far longer to work, and the Huffington Post reports that the portable device is used to determine if a driver is impaired from recent marijuana use.

Marijuana use is still prohibited under federal law in the United States, but 23 states have eased access to marijuana for medical use and four, plus Washington, D.C., allow recreational use.
