The Great British Bake Off’s Boris Johnson sketch receives 200 complaints

Wil Jones

The sketch that opened The Great British Bake Off has received over 200 complaints to media regulator Ofcom.

The episode opened with Matt Lucas playing Boris Johnson in a pastiche of the prime minister’s broadcast on the new coronavirus restrictions. The Great British Bake Off had been delayed by Channel 4 in order to show Johnson’s message.

Ofcom confirmed to Metro that they had received 202 complaints regarding the sketch. It is standard procedure for Ofcom to now investigate if it broke broadcasting rules.

Matt Lucas played Boris Johnson in a blonde wig, standing at a podium with the slogan “Stay Alert, Bake Cake, Save Loaves.”

Aside from Lucas’ uncanny impression of Johnson, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood all featured in the sketch too, playing the roles of the advisors either side of Lucas as Johnson, with Noel Fielding asking a question via video link. The question? How to pronounce scone.
