The action-packed new show that could fill that Game of Thrones shaped hole in your life

Paul Moore

While we’re waiting for Season 8.

There’s no denying that George R.R Martin was heavily influenced by a host of other fantasy novels, mythology and folklore when he was writing the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

For example, The War of the Roses, Lord of the Rings, Hadrian’s Wall, Henry Tudor’s life and events like the the Black Dinner have all shaped the events that unfold in Game of Thrones, but there’s one area that’s overlooked, Celtic mythology.

In fact, many people believe that the White Walkers are largely based on the Aos Sí, or the Sidhe, a race of fairy-like beings from the Irish mythology because the invasion of the Others resembles the same arc in these fairytales. In Sky Atlantic’s new show, Britannia, Celtic mythology comes to the fore.

If you’re looking for something that combines action, folklore and historical fiction then Britannia could be just the thing for you.

Set in 43AD, the show follows the Roman army as they return to crush the Celtic heart of Britannia, a mysterious land that’s led by warrior women and powerful Druids who claim to channel the powerful forces of the underworld.

The nine-part series tells the story of the power struggle between three tribes: the Druids, Celts and Romans, who are all battling for control of Britannia.

The show stars Ian McDiarmid (Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith). Mackenzie Crook (The Office), Kelly Reilly (True Detective), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Nikolaj Lie Kaas (The Killing) and Zoë Wanamaker (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) and many others.

If you’re a fan of shows like Game of Thrones, Rome, The Tudors, Vikings or The Last Kingdom then this should appeal to you.

Britannia will be available on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV early next year.
