It is a comeback few expected. When the Season 3 finale aired in May 2023, Ted had chosen to leave Richmond behind to be with his son and look after his own mental health, and the series looked done. More than three years later, one of Apple TV’s biggest hits is back – and this time Ted is taking on a very different challenge.

The twist at the heart of Season 4 is that Ted returns to the club he loves to coach its women’s team, while Roy Kent remains in charge of the men. It is a neat way of getting the band back together without simply repeating the first three seasons, and it lets the show explore the women’s game just as its profile has never been higher. The trailer plays up the reunion: familiar faces, familiar beats, and the relationship between Roy and Keeley once again set to feature prominently, a dynamic fans have followed since the very first season.

Sudeikis is joined by returning cast members Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt and Jeremy Swift, alongside new additions including Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely. For a show that began in 2020 as a gentle underdog comedy, the ensemble has become one of the most recognisable on television.

Why a fourth season is a gamble worth watching

Season 4 arrives with a question hanging over it. Ted Lasso was always pitched as a three-season story: writer and star Brett Goldstein told the Sunday Times the show was “planned as three”, and co-creator Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly back in 2021 that he envisioned a “three-season arc”. News of the renewal only landed in March 2025, following speculation that Season 3 would be the end.

The numbers explain the appetite for more. The series has been viewed for more than 25 billion minutes and has racked up 13 Emmys from 61 nominations, with acting wins for Goldstein, Sudeikis and Waddingham among others. That is the kind of track record that keeps a show on air, and it sits comfortably alongside the other major titles dominating the streaming conversation this year.
