Spoiler alert: It’s not actually that scary

Stephen King is no doubt the King (not sorry) of horror.

Whether it’s Misery, It, Carrie or one of his many other terrifying novels or subsequent film adaptations – you’re likely to have struggled to sleep after immersing yourself in one of his mortifying masterpieces.

So naturally, if you’re as messed up as us and looking to watch the scariest horror scene of all time, you’re going to seek advice from the master himself.

Thankfully, the King has spoken – but his answer was somewhat surprising…

King stands by the fact that the scariest horror scene he has ever witnessed was from Night of the Living Dead – the zombie horror from 1968 that has since become a classic of the genre.

The film, created by George A. Romero, follows seven people who are trapped in a rural farmhouse in western Pennsylvania which is being attacked by a growing group of cannibalistic living dead (sounds an absolute ball, doesn’t it?).

In an article for Entertainment Weekly, King wrote: “The scariest sequence I can remember is in Night of the Living Dead. The cemetery-visiting heroine, Barbara, is chased back to her car by a lurching zombie with white hair and dazed eyes. She locks herself in only to discover her brother has taken the keys. The zombie reaches down, finds a rock, and begins to bash it strengthlessly against the car window. The first time I saw this (and twice after), the scene reduced me to jelly.”

While the zombies-coming-to-get-you plot is a concept that always fills us with fear, this particularl scene does not come across quite as frightening as you might expect. The music is really dramatic and definitely adds a lot of cheese that you might not see in your typical modern day horror movie.

However we have to remember this film is over 50 years old and even if you don’t find it scary, you’ll at least get a laugh out of it.
