Someone made a version of Super Mario 64 that up to 24 people can play online together

This might be the single greatest creation of the 21st century

Rich Cooper

Few people are going to argue with this statement: Super Mario 64 is one of the best games of the ’90s.

What’s that? You dis-agree? Well, perhaps you might also like to dis-appear! *pushes button for hidden trapdoor*

Joking, of course. That button signals the police, who will throw you in jail and charge you with high treason, for which you will be found guilty and killed, because this is Nintendo Town, futhermucker.

State-sponsored execution aside, something else is happening in Nintendo Town. Something unofficial. Modders have created a version of Super Mario 64 that allows up to 24 players to all join in online and play together as different Mario characters.

It’s called Super Mario 64 Online, and judging by the above video, it looks like ridiculously good fun.

You can run around and complete levels like the original game, or you can get creative and invent your own games to play with your pals. With 23 other people to play against, you could come up with some really off-the-wall game modes of your own.

Due warning: to play Super Mario Online 64, you have to do some fiddling about and setting up. You’ll need a PC, an emulator and the correct ROM, and if those words mean nothing to you, you’d better get up to speed.

Once you know what you’re doing, check out this tutorial that will show you how to get on Super Mario 64 Online.

We haven’t had a go on this, but it looks like more fun than you can shake a Goomba at. Enjoy it while it lasts, as Nintendo famously aren’t too keen on projects like these, but there’s no denying that this is a great idea.
