A huge sinkhole has opened up in Malibu following days of heavy rain in Southern California, reportedly damaging a home belonging to actor Nicolas Cage.
According to The New York Times, Cage bought the property in 2024. Nearby residents were first alerted to the problem on Monday, when an approximately 8ft sinkhole was discovered.
At the time, there was little reason to believe the situation would become so serious. One resident told Los Angeles magazine that they initially thought the problem could be dealt with relatively easily.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn in the early hours of Tuesday morning when more of the ground suddenly gave way. The sinkhole rapidly expanded, eventually reaching an estimated 30ft by 30ft and swallowing a substantial section of the home’s driveway.
The collapse left broken asphalt, concrete and construction debris inside the enormous crater. It also caused a gas leak, prompting emergency services to respond, with SoCalGas later confirming that the leak had been secured.
Fortunately, nobody was injured, but the damage has created major problems for the surrounding area.
Malibu officials have since declared at least five homes on the street unsafe to enter and warned that emergency access is “severely constrained”. The road could also become impassable because such a large section has collapsed.
