Sky One will be replaced on our TVs in under a week after 40 years

Rory Cashin

Sky has revealed what to expect on its new channel when it launches in September.

Initially launched as Sky Television in 1982, before being renamed as Sky Channel in 1984, and finally Sky 1 in 1996 (and then rebranded again, kinda, as Sky One in 2017), the longest-running non-terrestrial channel in the UK and Ireland will effectively be no more as of next week.

From Wednesday, 1 September, Sky One will be replaced on all existing platforms by Sky Showcase, which will broadcast a selection of the best and most-talked-about shows from across Sky’s portfolio of entertainment channels.

For current customers of Sky, as well as Virgin Media and NOW, Sky Showcase will launch alongside another new channel, Sky Max, both added with no extra charge.

Sky Max will feature the latest episodes of Sky’s recent hit shows (including A League of Their Own, Prodigal Son, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Strike Back, S.W.A.T., MacGyver, Manifest) as well as a host of new additions.

Sky Showcase will also be home to some new shows throughout September, including Young Rock, Mr. Mayor, the NFL Season Launch and the long-awaited return of Never Mind The Buzzcocks

There will also be the big weekend movie – every Saturday at 9pm – with some of the movies for the first month already announced: Fast and Furious 7 (4 Sept), Jurassic World (11 Sept) and The Dark Knight (25 Sept).

And great news for those with younger viewers, every Sunday mornings will kick off with best of DreamWorks. From 7am to 9am, the highlights include Dragons: Rescue Riders, Madagascar: A Little Wild, All Hail King Julien: Exiled, Trolls: TrollsTopia and Where’s Wally.
