Six men get fined for wearing Borat mankinis, Sacha Baron Cohen is paying their fines

Paul Moore

Great success! What a hero.

Throughout film history, certain clothes, styles, and trends have managed to become a part of the culture.

We’re thinking about the likes of James Dean’s look in Rebel Without a Cause, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and even Ryan Gosling’s jacket in Drive had a cultural impact.

Simply put, people will always try and copy Hollywood stars but there’s no doubting where the mankini trend originated from.

During Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the world got a glorious insight into the life of the world’s greatest journalist, Borat Sagdiyev.

When he wasn’t insulting feminists, Jews, gypsies, Christians, Pamela Anderso, everyone under the sun or enjoying some naked wrestling, we also got a look at Borat bathing in the sunlight.

Sadly, that’s not all we saw!

Since the cult-classic was released, the mankini has become a popular novelty item for people to buy and it made an appearance in Kazakhstan recently. Sadly, the authorities didn’t take too kindly to the ‘casual’ look that these bunch of men were sporting.

After being made aware of the news, Sacha Baron Cohen has offered to pay the fines for these six Czech tourists who were arrested in Kazakhstan for wearing nothing but ‘Borat’ inspired mankinis.

The group was visiting the capital city of Astana and local media have reported that the tourists were fined 22,500 Tenge ($67; £51) each for their “indecent” appearance.

“To my Czech mates who were arrested. Send me your details and proof that it was you, and I’ll pay your fine,” the comedian wrote on Facebook.

What a hero. Chenquieh!
