Sega legends ToeJam & Earl are looking seriously funky in the first trailer for their new game

So much nostalgia

Matt Tate

It’s been quite the year for old-school Sega fans.

First there was the news that we’re getting a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game in honour of the company mascot’s 25th anniversary, and now we have a trailer for a modern day reboot of ToeJam and Earl.

For those who can’t remember, ToeJam and Earl was a “rogue-like” action game that would go on to become a bit of a Mega Drive cult classic in the early ’90s, along with its sequel, ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron.

The game starred two aliens that just so happened to have a penchant for hip-hop and funk. It had a fantastic soundtrack and was doing procedurally generated levels before they were even a thing. Progressive and funky.

The series did return on the Xbox for 2002’s ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth, but fans have been waiting a long time for a game that recaptures the spirit of the original games.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove looks like it could just be that game. Adult Swim are publishing the title, which is pencilled in for a 2017 console and PC release, and the new trailer features the first glimpse of gameplay footage.

It’s looking ace.
