Waller-Bridge could be about to don the hat and whip

Fans across the world are reacting to the rumours that Fleabag superstar Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in line to replace Harrison Ford in the iconic role of Indiana Jones.

Waller-Bridge is confirmed to star alongside the veteran actor in the upcoming fifth installation of the swashbuckling franchise in an as-yet unconfirmed role.

A source has reportedly told the Mail that producer Kathleen Kennedy is keen to make ‘bold’ changes to the long-running film series.

Ford has been in the archeologist’s hat for four films since 1981 – Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (though the less said about that one the better.)

According to the rumours, Waller-Bridge will potentially take up the lead role in future films as the central adventurer in search of lost treasures, following the next film’s release.

Fans have been quick to react to the potential casting on social media, with some lauding the move as a great choice, while others questioned whether it would be a successful move.

“Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a very talented actress, so why is Kathleen Kennedy trying to get her to replace an iconic male character? Let her play her own original person instead of rebooting everything. Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford’s gig,” wrote one commenter on Twitter.

“I think this will be awesome,” wrote another.

Waller-Bridge is perhaps best-known in the UK for her work as writer and star of BBC Three’s hit Fleabag. She also has writing credits on Killing Eve and the upcoming James Bond installation No Time To Die.

A spokesperson for Kennedy reportedly declined to comment on the rumours of Waller-Bridge’s future role in the franchise.

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in 2022.
