Nickelodeon exec drops big hint about potential Rugrats revival

It’s only been a few months since Nickelodeon confirmed that legendary cartoon Hey Arnold! is making a comeback, and it looks like Rugrats might receive the same treatment somewhere down the line.

Anyone born in the 90s grew up watching Tommy and his intrepid gang of nappy-wearing baby pals bust out of their pen time and time again, with their parents absolutely clueless about their adventures. Rugrats was one of Nick’s flagship shows at a time when the station was a seriously big deal, but despite spawning several movies and the slightly odd All Grown Up – which introduced us to the original characters as preteens – we’ve not had a new episode since what appeared to be the last ever series way back in 2004.

But that *could* change in the not-so-distant future. During an appearance at New York Comic Con, Nickelodeon’s senior vice president for original movies, Michael Sammaciccia, was discussing plans to revive a load of old-school franchises.

He mentioned the upcoming Legends of the Hidden Temple TV movie, and seeing as nostalgia was clearly the flavour of the day, it was inevitable that someone quizzed him on the likelihood of a Rugrats comeback.

Sammaciccia wouldn’t confirm or deny anything, but what he said should give fans hope. “What’s happening with [Legends of the Hidden Temple] is that it’s allowing Nickelodeon to look at the rich library they have, and not just Rugrats,” the exec explained. “All of them are being considered.”

If the show did come back it would presumably do so as a TV movie as well, but as Tommy used to say, “a baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do.”
