Netflix’s latest drama looks like Breaking Bad with even more gangsters

Paul Moore

Mexican cartels, drug money and a family falling apart. Sound familiar?

Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything and the one man who had no choice but to keep them all together.

TV fans might be more familiar with seeing Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth in the superb Arrested Development, but as we’ve seen before, the actor is more than capable of delivering some dark performances.

Juno, Smokin’ Aces and The Gift saw Bateman deliver more edgier turns, but his new TV show on Netflix appears to be his most dramatic role yet.

In Ozark, Bateman stars as Marty Byrde alongside Academy Award nominee Laura Linney as his wife Wendy.

The Byrdes and their teenage kids, Charlotte and Jonah, are, for all intents and purposes, an ordinary family with ordinary lives.

This being said, Marty’s job as a Chicago financial advisor has repercussions for the whole family when he starts to act as the top money launderer for the second largest drug cartel in Mexico.

When trouble arrives, Marty must uproot his family from the skyscrapers of Chicago and relocate to the lazy lake region of the Missouri Ozarks.

Having watched the ominous trailer, it’s impossible not to get the the sense of Cape Fear meeting Breaking Bad.

The series will comprise of ten one-hour episodes, debuting on Netflix on 21 July.

Here’s the trailer and some new footage that was recently released.
