Netflix announces the end of its longest running show

The show debuted on the streaming service in 2017

We’ve previously covered the full, expansive list of shows that Netflix have cancelled after just one season – four of those in 2023 alone so far – so for a show to be made, to get one season, and then to get beyond that first season into multiple seasons is a huge triumph.

This week, Netflix have announced the impending end to their longest running scripted show (outside of family show stuff like Cocomelon and the likes), with the news that ahead of its incoming seventh season, the streaming service has renewed Big Mouth for its eighth and final season.

With this eighth season, Big Mouth will now have a longer run than Netflix’s previous longest-running scripted show, when Grace & Frankie ended on its seventh season in 2022. Additionally, Netflix have announced that the Big Mouth-spin off show Human Resources will also end with its upcoming second season.

Big Mouth debuted on Netflix in September 2017, becoming an immediate hit with viewers and critics (seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5 all scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes), and between the shows, they have clocked up over one billion hours viewed on the streamer.

Co-creator and voice actor Nick Kroll said of the show ending: “If you would have told adolescent Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg that middle school would take eight years to finish, they would have been like, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right. This seems like it will never end.'”

Billy Wee, Netflix’s Director of Adult Animation, said: “Big Mouth is a towering achievement in animated comedy that will make Netflix history for its longevity. We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious seasons to share with fans before this brilliant coming of age story reaches its conclusion.”

Seasons 1 to 6 of Big Mouth and the first season of Human Resources are available to watch on Netflix right now, while Big Mouth Season 7 is due to arrive later in 2023, and Big Mouth Season 8 and Human Resources Season 2 are both set to debut in 2024.
