What would 2016 have been without Eric Monkman? The worst year EVER, that's what.

The shouty Canadian, studying for a masters in economics at Wolfson College, Cambridge, won the hearts of a nation when he first appeared on University Challenge a couple of months ago. And on the evening of Monday, December 5, our hero returned. Once again, Monkman guided his team to another victory (of course he bloody well did - he's Monkman), but it wasn't quite a perfect performance for him, having got a few of his questions wrong. Every time Jeremy Paxman informed him that he'd answered incorrectly, Monkman couldn't disguise the expression of crushing disappointment that spread across his face.
