Matt Terry reveals how a break-up convinced him to enter X Factor

X Factor winner Matt Terry only entered the show as a response to being dumped by his girlfriend, the 23-year-old has revealed.

Terry, whose Christmas single 'When Christmas Comes Around' was released this week, told the Daily Mirror it was "really tough" when dancer Jas Avis broke up with him in May. The pair had been together for three years, and the former waiter's immediate reaction was to quit his job and chase stardom on the ITV talent show, and admits it has "worked out for the best" after he won the live final against rival Saara Aalto. “At the time it was really tough because she ended it, it was her choice. We just spent so much time together," Terry said. “She hasn’t tried to get back with me, she sticks by her decision. We’re friends as we’ve got the same friendship group," he added, when asked how things were between them now. “She’s wished me luck throughout the competition and has been supportive.” The Londoner had to be bought out of a panto contract after winning this year's X Factor, suggesting that - while he was certainly keen to take part - he didn't exactly have high hopes of winning.
