The gentleman burglar is back

Lupin Part 3 has finally arrived on Netflix.

Fans have had to wait almost two and a half years, but the latest batch of episodes of the French crime series have landed on the streaming platform.

Lupin is based on Maurice Leblanc’s ‘Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar’ stories, and stars Omar Sy as master thief Assane Diop, who tries to emulate the fictional character as he tried to get revenge for an injustice against his father.

Diop’s dad, Babakar, worked as a chauffeur for the wealthy family of the evil Hubert Pellegrini, who framed him for stealing a priceless necklace.

After being imprisoned for the crime, Babakar kills himself, leaving Diop to look after himself.

Minor spoilers for the first two parts below

The end of the part 1 saw Diop’s son taken hostage by one of Pellegrini’s henchmen, and the master criminal must try and save him while also dealing with a cop trying to catch him.

Part 2, which arrived back in June 2021, saw Diop save his son and clear his father’s name. Pellegrini is arrested by police, but Diop is still wanted by various groups, meaning that the last time fans saw him he was on the run and separated from his family.

The synopsis for the new season, which is made up of seven episodes, reads: “Now in hiding, Assane must learn to live far from his wife and son.

“With the suffering they endure because of him, Assane can’t stand it any longer and decides to return to Paris to make them a crazy proposal: leave France and start a new life elsewhere.

“But the ghosts of the past are never far away, and an unexpected return will turn his plans upside down.”

The show’s co-creator and writer George Kay told the Radio Times that things are very different for Diop now

He told the publication: “Assane has gone from a life of anonymity as a criminal in parts 1 and 2, and now he is France’s most wanted man.

“His cover is broken because of what happened towards the end of part 2 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and now everybody is asking the same question, ‘Where is he?’, which is a problem when you’re a thief, because when you try and steal things, everyone knows what you look like.

“So he comes back into Paris at the start of part 3 and discovers that the whole city is looking for him.”

Lupin 3 is available to watch on Netflix now.
