John Travolta and Nicolas Cage set to return for Face/Off 2

Rumours continue to swirl about the Face/Off sequel

For those of you who aren't familiar with this particular piece of groundbreaking cinema, Face/Off is an action thriller directed by John Woo.

The film follows Sean Archer (Travolta), and FBI agent on a relentless mission to catch terrorist Castor Troy (Cage) who is responsible for the death of his son.

After finally apprehending Troy, who falls into a coma, Archer undergoes an experimental procedure to swap faces with Troy in order to infiltrate his criminal organisation and prevent a catastrophic attack. However, Troy awakens from his coma, now wearing Archer's face, and takes over Archer's life.

The film was both a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest grossing films of 1997 and still holds an impressive score of 93 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

In particular, Travolta and Cage were praised for their performances, as was the over-the-top violent action of the movie.

Back in 2019, Paramount Pictures announced it had plans for another Face/Off film, and in February 2021 it was announced that this would be a sequel to the first film.

Now, industry scooper Daniel Richtman has claimed both Travolta and Cage are set to return for the project, which will be directed by Adam Wingard.

Cage has previously addressed reports about the sequel, telling Collider last year that he had "one meeting" about the film. However, he said he had heard nothing since.

He told the publication how he envisaged a sequel playing out, saying: “I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability.”

“It's almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it's not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it's four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex.”
