John Cena confirmed for upcoming Duke Nukem film

James Dawson

The champ is here.

It’s official, John Cena will play the lead in the upcoming Duke Nukem film – and looking at a picture of them side-by-side you’ve got to say it’s perfect casting.

First appearing in 1991, the Duke Nukem video game was a huge success because the eponymous lead actually possessed a sense of humour, compared to the voiceless heroes of games like Doom, Quake and Half-Life.

It was announced earlier this year that the game would be getting turned into a film and  the producers of the upcoming project, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, gave fans an update in a new interview with CinemaBlend.

They admitted don’t even have a script yet, but Form told them Cena was involved in the project: “Yeah, that’s what we’re working with now. He is. Yes. We don’t have a script yet, so that is confirmed at this point but if he reads the script and he doesn’t like the script I’m sure there’s ways that he could pull out, but right now he’s our guy.”

In the interview, they also said that Deadpool would serve as inspiration for the film: “We are working on Duke Nukem right now. It’s going to be about tone. That’s about tone. How do you nail that tone in the way that Deadpool nailed the tone? I think we have to do that and if we don’t get the tone right then we’re not going to make the movie.”

This all sounds promising and given that, after 15 years of development, 2011’s Duke Nukem Forever was one of the most disappointing releases of all time – it will be good to finally get a film worthy of the franchise.
