JOE meets the most laid-back band known to man, Crystal Fighters

Lia Nicholls

If Russell Brand were in a band, Crystal Fighters would be it, supporting Morrissey, naturally.

With more harem pants than a yoga retreat, you’re more likely to see the electronic folk five-piece on a stage in the Balearics than in a sweaty club.

On a long sliding scale somewhere in the middle is London’s Tobacco Dock. That’s where they played for Wahaca’s Day of the Dead Festival, which is where we caught up with them.

You’re often talked of as being a band to watch in the summer, do you prefer festival gigs?

Sun, love and massive line-ups means we definitely like the festival gigs. Then again, there is a lot to be said for gigs in packed out sweatboxes…hmmm.

For those who don’t know you, sum yourselves up in a sentence?

Imagine all the elements of the universe coming together and combining in this one energetic explosion of love and music.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard recently?

Live life for love, love life for real.

Who is your most famous fan?

Daniel Radcliffe was dropping some CF and we are good friends with the guys from Foals and Imagine Dragons.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?

There is something very special about the Basque Country, everything is just better there. Get yourselves down to San Sebastian.

What do you do to relax?

We like to surf where possible. Being out and at one with nature is such a humbling experience…plus those barrels, dude…
