Ed Coutts, owner of accommodation provider Waiheke Unlimited, told the New Zealand Herald: "The cost was outrageous and the show’s promoters were complaining they were going broke."
On another visit, Mr Coutts said the Clarkson - who has a budget of £4.5million per episode on his new Amazon show - wanted a new Range Rover Sport with no mileage on it.
He said: “It never got used. I asked what was the point and he said, ‘I just wanted to look at it’.”
