James Corden has revealed the final episode of Gavin and Stacey, set to air at Christmas, will be ‘hard to watch’.
Joanna Page and Mathew Horne who play the title characters are set to reunite with Corden, Ruth Jones, Melanie Walters, Larry Lamb, Rob Brydon and Alison Steadman for the final time.
The show last aired in 2019 but a Christmas special commissioned for this year is set to conclude the British sitcom.
The cast have been warned to keep scripts hidden in an attempt to prevent storyline leaks to the press.
However, Corden himself has dropped a huge hint as to what might happen to some of our favourite characters.
During an appearance at the Global Gala Gift on October 28, the talk show host, 46, confirmed that it would be an emotional episode.
Fans are already hopeful that a wedding might take place but the actor who plays Smithy teased there would also be a funeral.
Though the plot has mostly been kept under wraps, Corden told the audience he had been editing the show that day and that the funeral scenes were ‘hard to watch’.
According to Hello! he quickly added: “But was there a funeral? Maybe yes. Maybe no!”
Corden later told The Mirror: “What we were editing today was a very moving and emotional scene at Bryn’s funeral. I’m joking, I promise. Or am I?”
Uncle Bryn is played by 59-year-old Rob Brydon and is a fan-favourite on the show.
Corden told BBC Breakfast: “It’s lovely, it’s wonderful, all of it, it’s all overwhelming, the fact it’s probably the last time I’ll probably ever be here. All of it, it’s wonderful.”
Steadman previously said the whole cast was ‘dreading’ the final scene adding: “I think 90% of us were in tears, some people braved it, because it’s been so fantastic.”
The comedy aired for three series between 2007 and 2010 and made a comeback in 2019 for a one-off festive episode which ended on a cliff-hanger when Jones’ character Nessa proposed to Smithy.
It scored the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years, attracting an average audience of 11.6 million viewers, making it the biggest festive special since Christmas Day 2008.
Jones and Corden confirmed that work had begun on the final episode back in May as they shared a snap of the script titled: ‘Gavin and Stacey: The Finale’.
