The problem with a lot of sequels to classic movies is that they just rehash what went before. All the Terminator films after Terminator 2 haven’t really known what to do with the franchise, and have failed because of it. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is actually a pretty ok action movie taken on its own merits, but ultimately it’s just a rehash of part 2. And Terminator 2 is arguably the greatest action movie of all time, so trying to ape it is always going to lead to a letdown.

Part of what made Terminator 2 so good was that it was radically different to the first Terminator. And if you’re going to something with characters and movies that are already beloved and part of the cannon, you better do something we haven’t seen before with them.

Which is why the new trailer for The Predator has got us excited. The latest sequel to the 1987 Arnie classic has you standard collection of humans trying to survive the hunt.

But more excitingly, it has two Predators facing up to each other, about to square off. That’s something we haven’t seen before. And it is also something that could be pretty goddamn cool if they get it right.

The synopsis for the film reads:

“From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

The Predator is out September 14th.
