Here are the horror films that you’ll be itching to see in 2018

Do you like scary movies?

With the new year upon us, it’s time to get excited about some of the new releases that will be coming to your cinema over the next 12 months.

We’ve already told you about some of the films that we’re most excited about but here’s our pick of the best horrors/ films with a strong horror element.

The New Mutants

Plot: Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

Release date: April 11th

On your radar because:  It’s the X-Men with a horror twist. The franchise was screaming for reinvention and the trailer definitely grabbed our attention.

Annihilation

Plot: A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply.

Release date: 23 February

On your radar because: The book is bloody terrifying and Alex Garland (Ex Machina) is one of the best up-and-coming directors around.

Mom and Dad

Plot: A teenage girl and her little brother must survive a wild 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

Release date: Jan 19th (US), the UK is not confirmed yet.

On your radar because: It’s from the director of Crank and stars Nicholas Cage. This is going to be batshit crazy.

The Strangers: Prey at Night

Plot: A family staying in a secluded mobile home park for the night are visited by three masked psychopaths, to test their every limit.

Release date: March 9th US

On your radar because: The original was excellent and if it sticks to that formula, we expect plenty of nerve-shredding suspesnse.

Slice

Plot: When a pizza delivery driver is murdered on the job, the city searches for someone to blame: ghosts? Drug dealers? A disgraced werewolf?

Release date: N/A.

On your radar because: The studio behind this, A24, have already made The Witch, Green Room and It Comes at Night. It’s fair to say that they have got an eye for talent.

The Nun

Plot: A priest named Father Burke is sent to Rome to investigate the mysterious death of a nun.

Release date: July 13

On your radar because: The finest demon from The Conjuring gets her own spin-off. If the film is half as terrifying as those scenes in The Conjuring 2, this could be exceptional.

The Predator

Plot: One of the most iconic monsters in Hollywood history is back and this time he’s hunting in the suburbs.

Release date: August 3

On your radar because: It’s the fricking Predator being directed by Shane ‘Hawkins from the original’ Black.

Hold the Dark

Plot: In remote Alaska, a wolf expert is called in after a number of children fall victim to grizzly lupine attacks. There he discovers a secret, and wolves soon become the least of his problems.

Release date: NA

On your radar because: It’s from the director of the wonderful Green Room.

Halloween

Plot: Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Release date: October 19th

On your radar because: The original team are back!

The Meg

Plot: After escaping an attack by what he claims was by a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.

Release date: March 2nd

On your radar because: Jason Statham vs a 70-foot shark. What else do you need? Along with the Deep Blue Sea sequel, shark lovers are going to be in heaven.

 

The Little Stranger

Plot: Dr Faraday, the son of a housemaid, has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1947, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants – mother, son and daughter – are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how terrifyingly, the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own.

Release date: 31 August in US.

On your radar because: Domhnall Gleeson in a film from the talented director of Room. We’re expecting something that could chill you to your bones.

Slender Man

Plot: Slender Man tells the story of a tall, thin horrifying figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face, who is reputed to be responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens.

Release date: May 18th

On your radar because: The meme and myth continue to live on. Various documentaries have already been made but can a movie do this urban legend justice?

 

The Kid Who Would Be King

Plot: A band of kids embarks on an epic quest to thwart a medieval menace.

Release date:  28 September

Watch it because:  It’s Joe Cornish’s follow-up to his brilliant directorial debut, Attack the Block.

A Quiet Place

Plot: A family lives an isolated existence in utter silence, for fear of an unknown threat that follows and attacks at any sound.

Release date: April 6th

On your radar because: It’s that rare thing, a horror film that has a strikingly original plot and monster.

The Purge: The Island

Plot: The film will be a prequel that will focus on the events that lead up to the very first Purge event.

Release date: July 4th in US.

On your radar because: It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but The Purge films are a box-office behemoth.

The House with a Clock In its Walls

Plot: A young orphan named Lewis Barnavelt aids his magical uncle in locating a clock with the power to bring about the end of the world.

Release date: 19 October

On your radar because: Cate Blanchett working with the director of Hostel and Cabin Fever (Eli Roth) We’re intrigued. 

God Particle

Plot : After a scientific experiment aboard the space station involving a particle accelerator has unexpected results, the astronauts find themselves isolated. Following their horrible discovery, the space station crew must fight for survival.

Release date: April 20th

Watch it because: The next Cloverfield film is shrouded in mystery. Expect monsters and plenty of them.

Overlord

Plot: In 1944, two American paratroopers are shot down over Normandy in the midst of the D-Day invasion and they discover that the Nazis are using supernatural forces against them.

Release date: October 26th

Watch it because:  Bad Robot is also producing this WW2 horror. Could we be getting two Cloverfield films in the space of a few months? 2018 is going to be a terrifying treat for horror fans.
