Here are the best movies on TV this weekend

If you fancied staying in over the Bank Holiday weekend

Rory Cashin

There is a fantastic mix of movies on the telly this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gone to the cinema? We assume you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War by now? You probably should have, because everyone is talking about it.

If you are sitting in at any point over the weekend, however, then we recommend you check some of the following:

SATURDAY 5 MAY

Innerspace – SyFy – 17:30

Two Dennis Quaid movies in one weekend? What’re the chances?? In this one, he is made tiny and accidentally injected into Martin Short, who begins to fall in love with Quaid’s girlfriend (Meg Ryan).

Sphere – SyFy – 20:00

An all-star cast featuring Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson, Dustin Hoffman, Liev Schrieber, Peter Coyote and Queen Latifah, it tells the story of a group of scientists sent to the bottom of the ocean when an alien spacecraft is discovered there. And from that point on, some very weird things start happening to everyone in the vicinity…

Crimson Peak – Film 4 – 21:00

Guillermo Del Toro’s gothic-horror-romance stars Mia Wasikowska who is brought to a huge but crumbling mansion in the middle of nowhere by her new husband (Tom Hiddleston), much the annoyance of his over-protective sister (Jessica Chastain). And it turns out that the three of them might not be the only presences in the home.

The Transporter – E4 – 21:00

Jason Statham kicks people in the head. That is all you should need to know, really.

The Italian Job – Sky One – 21:00

Another all-star cast, featuring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Ed Norton, Jason Statham (again!), Donald Sutherland, Mos Def, Seth Green and, uhm, Kelly Brook, in this fun heist remake.

Evil Dead II – Syfy – 22:50

“Groovy.”

The Fugitive – ITV4 – 23:45

Did you know that this Harrison Ford thriller was actually nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars that year? It was also the third biggest box office hit of the year, after only Jurassic Park and Mrs. Doubtfire. We had no idea it was that popular. But then, to be fair, Tommy Lee Jones is fantastic in it.

Shutter Island – Film 4 – 01:20

Leo and Scorsese team up again to make the closest thing Marty has ever done to a horror movie. Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max Von Syndow, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Ted Levine and Jackie Earle Haley fill out the very impressive cast list. Because everyone wants to work with Leo and Scorsese, obvs.

SUNDAY 6 MAY

Evolution – E4 – 16:30

The writer and director of Ghostbusters tried to recapture the magic of Ghostbusters, but instead of ghosts, it was aliens. And while it didn’t match up, it was still a lot of fun. David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Seann William Scott, Orlando Jones, Ted Levine and Dan Aykroyd star.

The Devil Wears Prada – Film 4 -18:50

“Get me Demarchelier.”

There’s Something About Mary – Comedy Central – 21:00

Back when Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller and writer/directors The Farrelly Brothers were at the height of their powers, this was the comedy that absolutely everybody went to see that year, which was actually 20 years ago this summer!

MONDAY 7 MAY

The Princess Bride – Channel 4 – 12.20

Before Shrek, this was the ultimate snarky take on fairy tales. A true family comedy classics, featuring the talents of Billy Crystal, Chrisopher and the one and only Andre The Giant.

The Bourne Identity – ITV4 –  21:00

True, the Bourne series didn’t get truly brilliant until director Paul Greengrass came on board for the sequels. But the original is still a superior spy thriller. And that car chase with the Minis? *chef kiss emoji*.
