Harry Potter actor Robert Hardy has passed away age 91.

His family confirmed the news to the BBC as they described Hardy as having a “tremendous life” and a “giant career in theatre, television and film spanning more than 70 years”.

The actor appeared in a number of shows and movies throughout his career such as Foyle’s War, All Creatures Great And Small, Sense and Sensibility.

In more recent years, he starred as Cornelius Fudge in the four of the eight Harry Potter films.

His children Emma, Justine and Paul paid tribute to him in a statement released this afternoon.

It said:

“Dad is also remembered as a meticulous linguist, a fine artist, a lover of music and a champion of literature, as well a highly respected historian, and a leading specialist on the longbow.

“He was an essential part of the team that raised the great Tudor warship The Mary Rose.

“Gruff, elegant, twinkly, and always dignified, he is celebrated by all who knew him and loved him, and everyone who enjoyed his work.”

His former Harry Potter co-star Chris Rankin, who played Percy Weasley in the films, paid tribute to him on Twitter.

He wrote:

“BBC news tells me Robert Hardy, the Minister of Magic has died. Terribly sad. He was a very kind man who told wonderful stories. xx”
