The hit '90s psychological thriller movie The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is reportedly set to get a reboot starring Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs, Watcher).
The original was released in 1992 and starred Annabella Sciorra as Claire Bartel - a happily married wife and mother-to-be who, after being assaulted by her doctor during a routine check-up, reports him to the police.
When the stress of the accusations and their fallout causes the doctor's own pregnant wife, Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay), to have a miscarriage, she becomes obsessed with getting revenge against Claire.
"Peyton poses as a nanny for the Bartel family. Her plan: to tear Claire's life apart, seduce her husband (Matt McCoy) and eventually murder the woman she blames for ruining her life," the plot synopsis reads.
Directed by the late and great Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, L.A. Confidential) and also featuring Ernie Hudson, Julianne Moore and Madeleine Zima as part of its cast, the 1992 movie took its title from a famous poem by William Ross Wallace that praises motherhood as the preeminent force for change in the world: 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World'.
Praised upon release for its great performances, its darkly compelling story and its tense set-pieces, the film was a huge hit at the box office - grossing a reported $140 million at the box office on a $11.9 million budget.
According to multiple outlets, a movie remake is now in the works at 20th Century Studios from director Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman) and writer Micah Bloomberg (Prime Video hit series Homecoming).
It is also said that the much in demand Monroe has signed on to headline the thriller reboot and that she will be stepping into the villain role previously played by De Mornay.
The other lead role originally played by Sciorra is reportedly still up for grabs.
