EXCLUSIVE: Its star says he would love to do a second season, saying he hopes for it ‘more than anything’.
We here at JOE were big fans of Apple TV+’s 2024 mystery thriller series Sugar starring Colin Farrell.
And though the show has not yet been renewed by the streaming giant for season two, its Irish star has told JOE that he would love to do a second season – saying he hopes for it “more than anything”.
For those not aware, Farrell in the series plays John Sugar, a modern-day private investigator who specialises in finding missing people.
On account of these skills, the PI is hired by famous Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to locate his missing granddaughter Olivia (Sydney Chandler).
A recovering addict, the rest of Olivia’s family – including her less successful producer father Bernie (Dennis Boutsikaris), her rock star step-mother Melanie (Amy Ryan) and her former child actor step-brother David (Nate Corddry) – are less concerned with her disappearance.
As Sugar investigates, however, he uncovers the seedy underbelly of LA hiding just beneath the glitz and glamour.
With its hugely likeable lead turn from Farrell, its stylish direction from Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and Adam Arkin (Get Shorty), its cool LA setting, its tantalising mysteries and its huge twists – Sugar made for great TV.
And yet, the series has not yet been renewed by Apple TV+ following its first season finale last May.
This is despite Sugar holding a 81% Rotten Tomatoes score and our initial review of the show reading: “The series ultimately wraps up in a rewarding fashion while setting up a potential second season. If Farrell returns, we would too.”
Well, recently JOE caught up with Farrell to discuss his other excellent crime thriller series from this year: The Penguin, his new spin-off to 2022 blockbuster The Batman.
And during that chat, the Oscar-nominee spoke to us about the strong Irish connections in The Batman franchise, the unusual prosthetic he sported for a key scene in the new spin-off show and how transforming into the series’ lead character Oz Cobb compared to some of his previous roles.
Towards the end of the interview, we told Farrell that we loved Sugar and that we hoped that it and The Penguin would both get second seasons.
In response, he said:
“Thanks man, me too. I’d love to because I get to be home – Sugar was in Los Angeles, so I get to stay home and do it, if we’re doing a second season.
“So I hope so more than anything.”
All eight episodes of Sugar are streaming now on Apple TV+.
The first episode of The Penguin, meanwhile, is already available to watch on Sky and streaming service NOW, with new episodes out every Monday.
