First trailer for Robbie Williams biopic released starring monkey as Robbie

Harry Warner

Interesting monkey business

The first trailer for Robbie Williams’ biopic has been released starring the superstar musician as a monkey which certainly has confused many fans.

The trailer dropped today which follows the life and career of Take That front man Robbie Williams in musical form, directed by Michael Gracey, director of The Greatest Showman.

The film is called Better Man and features the British pop star as a CGI monkey.

In the trailer, Williams explains the choice to cast himself as an ape as he says, “I know what you’re thinking. What’s with the monkey? I’m Robbie Williams. I’m one of the biggest pop stars in the world. But I’ve always seen myself a little less…evolved.”

The monkey which portrays Williams throughout the film is strikingly resemblant to one of the monkey’s from Planet of the Apes, however with much more musical talent.

The official description of the film reads: “Better Man is based on the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams, one of the greatest entertainers of all time.

“Under the visionary direction of Michael Gracey (‘The Greatest Showman’), the film is uniquely told from Williams’ perspective, capturing his signature wit and indomitable spirit.

“It follows Robbie’s journey from childhood, to being the youngest member of chart-topping boyband Take That, through to his unparalleled achievements as a record-breaking solo artist – all the while confronting the challenges that stratospheric fame and success can bring.”

The cast features Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman, Kate Mulvaney, Frazer Hadfield, Tom Budge and Anthony Hayes.

And just in case you were wondering about the monkey, Jonno Davies plays the ape version of Williams.

The film will premiere in select theatres on Christmas Day while the film will be released nationwide 17 January 2025.
