Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 26 February) is Ema, the 2019 thriller drama from acclaimed director Pablo Larraín (El Conde, Jackie, Spencer).
The film centres around the title character (played by Mariana Di Girolamo in a star-making turn), a young reggaeton dancer in Chile who divorces Gaston (Golden Globe winner Gael García Bernal, Mozart in the Jungle) - the director of her dance company.
The pair had adopted a young boy but wound up returning him to the orphanage after a disturbing incident, something that has made them villains in their community.
Following these events, the impulsive Ema "sets out on a mission to get the child back, not caring who she’ll need to fight, seduce or destroy to make it happen."
Featuring dazzling dance sequences, a great soundtrack, mesmerising performances from Bernal and Di Girolamo, fascinating themes, and a plot that constantly surprises viewers - this Chilean movie is well-worth seeking out.
If you'd like to watch it, the film is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Channel 4 at 1am.
It is also streaming on Mubi and should be available to check out on Channel 4 after it airs.
