Charli XCX on her favourite things at festivals

Lia Nicholls

Charli XCX would be the best festival buddy – until she starts taking pictures of the toilets.

The Boom Clap singer, who is playing Wireless, Reading and Leeds, and Bestival, doesn’t mind getting messy, stuck in the rain or putting up tents.

Talking about her most exhilarating festival experience, Charli, 22, told The Guardian: “At Bonnaroo festival a couple of years ago, we had nothing to do the next day, so we partied really really hard.

“My ex-boyfriend took acid with Billy Idol, which was quite funny. We all watched the xx, and it was the most beautiful moment ever and we were all crying. It was only about 10pm.”

Another plus for being part of her crew is she can’t stand hanging around, one of her biggest annoyances is “someone who doesn’t want to do anything. Someone who’s like: “Oh, my God, it’s raining and I don’t want to get my hair wet. Maybe we should wait.”

However, when it comes to loo breaks, as most of us are wrapping scarves around our faces to keep out the stench, leaving the door open on occasions even, Charli is happy to hang around.

“I’m kind of weird because I find the toilets at festivals really interesting,” she added. “I always take photos of them and send them to my friends who aren’t there.”

Charli’s festival appearances:

  • Wireless festival, July, 5
  • Reading and Leeds festivals, August 29 and 30
  • Bestival, September 10-13
