Can we figure out what the ending of Master Of None actually means?

Wil Jones

Spoilers for Master of None season 2, obviously.

Have you watched season 2 of Master Of None yet? The second series of Aziz Ansari’s masterful comedy drama dropped on Netflix this weekend, and is somehow even better than the first. The show builds on the rich character work of season 1 to do some vibrant, experimental episodes, going everywhere from an extend homage to 1940s Italian cinema to a time-jumping takedown of Tinder dates.

The main storyline of the season though is the unrequited love between Dev (Ansari), and Francesca, the girl he meets while studying how to make pasta in Italy (seriously, big spoilers coming up).

When Francesca eventually visits New York, Dev realises his feelings for her – but Francesca has now become engaged to her long-term boyfriend. Dev tells finally Francesca how he feels, but by then it’s too late. The penultimate scene of the last episode has Francesca arguing with her fiancé, but seemingly returning to Italy – but then the final two shots are of Dev and Francesca lying in bed together, with no further explanation offered.

So what is it? A flash forward? A flashback to a previous similar scene? A dream sequence? A happy ending?

It definitely left fans confused and emotional.

Ansari himself was asked about it by Entertainment Weekly, and he didn’t give any definitive answers:

I kind of wanted to leave it ambiguous and leave it open to people’s interpretations. I’ve heard some people say it’s a dream, other people say things are going to work out, things are going to be horrible. I want it to be an ending that you have your own interpretation of.

However, Vulture seem to have spotted a few vital clues. Some have suggested it is a flashback to the previous episode, where Dev and Francesca share a bed after being snowed in. However on closer inspection, the two of them are clearly wearing different clothes to that scene.

There’s another, more telling sign – in the final shot of the final episode, Francesca is no longer wearing her engagement ring. Is that confirmation that she left her fiancé for Dev?

We’ll just have to wait for season 3. Which might be a long time coming – if at all. In an interview with Vulture, Ansari said that he had no concrete plans as of yet.

I don’t know if we’re going to do a season three. I wouldn’t be surprised if I needed a looonng break before I could come back to it. I’ve got to become a different guy before I write a third season, is my personal thought.

I’ve got to get married or have a kid or something. I don’t have anything else to say about being a young guy being single in New York eating food around town all the time.

So that doesn’t really clear anything up, then…
