Amazon customers are reportedly cancelling their Prime subscriptions amid reports that Jeremy Clarkson‘s shows on the streaming service are to be axed in the wake of his column in The Sun about “hating” Meghan Markle.
The former Top Gear host apologised to the Duke & Duchess of Sussex earlier this week saying he was “profoundly sorry” for the opinion piece where he wrote that he dislikes the royal more than murderer Rose West, and dreamed of the former Suits star having excrement thrown at her in the streets. After publishing it in December, the tabloid later removed it at Clarkson’s request – after it became the most complained about article ever – and apologised.
Harry and Meghan rejected Clarkson’s apology, saying there was a “pattern” in the presenter’s writing, which features “hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny”.
Variety reported that Amazon Prime Video had parted ways with Clarkson and that the streaming service would not be working with the TV personality beyond seasons of The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm that have already been commissioned. So, the 62-year-old may not be appearing in any new shows on Prime Video beyond 2024.
The second season of Clarkson’s Farm will air as planned on the 10 February, and a third, already commissioned season, will also go ahead as planned, a spokesperson has said.
ITV bosses have also indicated they have no “commitments” to further editions of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? – fronted by Clarkson – beyond the upcoming, already-commissioned series.
One person wrote on Twitter: “So Amazon has dropped Jeremy Clarkson. Well, I’ve just cancelled my Amazon Prime account.”
A second added: “That’s my Amazon Prime cancelled #IStandWithJeremyClarkson.” Meanwhile, a third remarked: “I see Amazon have suspended Jeremy Clarkson over his comments on Meghan Markle.
“I actually don’t have a strong opinion on that, nor am I a huge fan of Jeremy Clarkson. I do however, care about free speech. “I have cancelled my Prime membership after 3 years.”
Some suggested the action would be taken by only a few, and have little impact.
I expect a few gammons threatening to cancel their Prime subscription will be the beginning of the end for Amazon, a company worth several hundred billion dollars
