UEFA have confirmed that Christian Eriksen has been stabilised after collapsing on the pitch during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener with Finland.

The former Tottenham player stumbled to the ground shortly before the game in Copenhagen. His teammates quickly realised how serious the situation was, forming a protective ring around him as he received medical attention on the pitch.

Eriksen was eventually taken to hospital. Players from both sides had left the pitch by this point.

A brief statement from UEFA confirmed that a crisis meeting had taken place to discuss the situation with both teams. Importantly, it added Eriksen has been stabilised.

‘Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET,’ the statement read.

‘The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.’

Several of Eriksen’s teammates had continued to surround him as he received medical attention, screening him from cameras and the spectators gathered in the ground.

Kasper Schmeichel was seen in discussions with a woman believed to Eriksen’s wife shortly before the BBC cut the broadcast and went back to the studio.
