Woman gives away computer worth $200,000

It’s not often that doing the recycling can earn you a six-figure sum.

A woman who gave away an old and unwanted computer could be in line for a huge windfall after it turned out to be a first generation Apple product, worth hundreds of thousands.

The only problem? The centre where she recycled the rare machine hasn’t been able to track her down.

The Clean Bay Area recycling centre in California’s Silicon Valley was paid a visit in April by a woman cleaning out her garage, but it turns out the electronics she handed over weren’t quite as worthless as she thought.

Now, if she comes forward, she has a small fortune waiting for her: the Apple 1 sold at auction for $200,000 (about £130,000), and Clean Bay Area has promised to give her half of the proceeds.

“It’s not every day that someone gives you $100,000,” Clean Bay Area VP Victor Gichun told NBC Bay Area.

With its huge tech deals going on all year round, we’d wager it happens more often in Silicon Valley than in most other places in the world.
