Man arrested after Tesla camera catches him lying about collision

The carโ€™s built-in camera caught him out

A Louisiana man has been outsmarted by a Tesla after he claimed the car hit him outside a busy gas station before fleeing the scene.

Little did he know, the incident - which took place on September 3 - was recorded by the vehicleโ€™s in-built camera, proving that the whole thing was faked.

47-year-old Arthur Bates Jr told authorities that the Elon Musk-developed car reversed into him, knocking him to the ground and causing injury to his back, leg and neck.

After calling 911, a fire truck and ambulance were dispatched to the scene but when Slidell Police Department took a closer look into the incident, it quickly became apparent that things were amiss.

After locating the carโ€™s owner, the driver explained that Bates purposely jumped in front of the reversing car - and viewing the Teslaโ€™s camera footage proved that he was right. Bates had made the whole thing up.

On Friday, September 3rd, Slidell Police arrested a man, for falsifying a police report, after he claimed to have been hit by a Tesla in a busy gas station parking lot.

Around 4:00pm, Slidell Police responded to the 1400 block of Fremaux Avenue after a man called 911 to report he was injured, after being struck by a Tesla. The man, identified as 47-year-old, Arthur Bates Jr., told officers the Tesla backed into him, causing him to fall to the pavement, and that the driver then fled the scene. Bates was complaining of back, leg and neck injuries, resulting in an ambulance and fire truck to be dispatched to the location.

Slidell Police officers later found the Tesla and spoke to the driver of the vehicle. The driver stated that Bates intentionally jumped behind his vehicle and staged the accident. Unbeknownst to Bates, Teslaโ€™s record all the footage of their cameras. When Slidell Police officers reviewed the Teslaโ€™s video footage, it became apparent that Bates was lying and staged the entire event.

Bates subsequently admitted to fabricating the entire event and was arrested for L.R.S. 14:126.1 (False Swearing with the Intent to Cause an Emergency Response).

The Teslaโ€™s video clearly shows Bates purposely jumping in front of the reversing car, before faking a fall onto the pavement and looking pained. Upon discovery that heโ€™d staged the accident, Bates confessed to police who arrested him for falsifying a police report.
