Keith Andrews had the better evening, calling his side "brilliant" after the win over their west London rivals, and said of them: "We're unpredictable."

Chelsea were without Joao Pedro, ruled out with a knee injury, and the Brazilian's absence disrupted a previously free-scoring attack featuring Cole Palmer and club record £117m signing Morgan Rogers.

Danny Welbeck, 35, replaced him with tidy possessions and got little service altogether.

Alonso has handed out 11 debuts, two of them on Friday: midfielder Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, the first 16-year-old to play for Chelsea in the Premier League, and Jordan Henderson, 36, against his former club.

The extended international break now gives the squad three weeks to sit with this one, after a month that has already included a first-team player being banished from the dressing room before a Carabao Cup tie.
