The 36-year-old Scot also discussed how impressed he was by Gerrard during his tenure in Glasgow, suggesting that he helped the players to 'play for the jersey'.
"He's done an amazing job at Rangers. I remember being asked the question what I think about him coming in when it initially happened and I said it's what we need, somebody with his level of passion, somebody who is going to make them play for the jersey, which is something you should be doing if you play for a club like Rangers but some of the players weren't," he said.
"It took a couple of years, we relied on [Alfredo] Morelos a long time. Finally in the last couple of seasons, everything started dropping into place and the team started to come together, he's got things set the way we need them."
Gerrard arrives at Villa Park with the Midlands club in 16th position - just two points off the relegation zone.
