Break ups are usually a good thing. Are they hard to take? Yes, but they happen for a reason and both parties are generally happier in the long run.

However, some break ups prove unwise. They seem a good idea at the time, but in the end one of you is left regretting the fact that you’ve lost the love of your life, or “the one” as some call it. And for what? Smoking in the toilets?

This feeling may be one that is familiar to Arsenal fans this morning, especially if they happened to witness the performance of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny at the weekend.

Deputising for Juventus number one Gianluigi Buffon against Cagliari, the former Arsenal man delivered a display of assurance and confidence, the likes of which Arsenal fans surely wish he’d shown more regularly at the Emirates.

If you’re a Gunners fans and want to expose yourself to even more pain after last night’s FA Cup exit, watch the video below.

Now, listen friend, I hear what you’re thinking. “There was nothing exceptional there, it was just a solid goalkeeping performance. Nothing crazy happened.” All very true, but isn’t that kind of the point?

Szczesny’s time at Arsenal was defined by a string of high-profile errors, but since his loan spell at Roma he has matured from someone you wouldn’t trust to boil an egg to someone who is truly the master of his own domain.

Gone are the ludicrous kick outs, the ill-judged tackles and the olive oil soaked gloves; in their place is a goalkeeper who actually concentrates for more than 30 seconds and looks at home in one of the best line ups in Europe.

With Petr Cech finally looking fallible and David Ospina still being David Ospina, it appears that Szczesny’s rise could not have come at a crueler time.

But remember, ’tis better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved before.
