Winklevoss twins target Premier League as they buy huge stake in football club

The cryptocurrency brothers, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss made their fortune in Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange.

The billionaire twins gained notoriety after the story of their long-running legal dispute with Mark Zuckerberg was interpreted onto the silver screen in the 2011 film The social Network.

They claimed that Zuckerberg stole their idea of Facebook while classmates at Harvard University.

With a net worth of £2.14bn, the pair have comfortably made their fortune and have now invested £3.58m into an eighth-tier football club in England, as revealed by Sky Sports News.

The club in question is Real Bedford FC with the Winklevoss brothers set to take a 45 per cent stake in the club and become co-owners.

The deal was reached in principle in April 2024, although documents have only just been signed on Wednesday.

Sky Sports News reports the investment is in cash, not the cryptocurrency bitcoin, contrary to reports last year.

The news follows an increasing trend in American millionaires and billionaires investing in English and Welsh football clubs, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney the most notable at Wrexham.

The Winklevoss brothers will work alongside current chair Peter McCormack, a crypto podcaster, who bought the club four years ago.

Outside of their money-making ventures, the twins are also known for having competed for the USA in the men's pair rowing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
