Why Bayern Munich only have five stars on their shirt

Bayern have won 32 Bundesliga titles and six European Cups

Bayern Munich are one of football’s most successful clubs and have 32 Bundesliga titles and six European cups to their names.

Normally, to celebrate achievements, clubs will add stars to their badges for winning competitions. For example, Nottingham Forest have two stars on their badge to represent their two European Cup wins.

Each country has their own star system, the most popular being a star for every league title won, however people have noticed that Bayern’s badge only contains five stars.

In Germany, the Bundesliga’s governing body, Deutsche Fussball Liga, decided in 2004 that they would award clubs for milestones of three, five, 10 and 20 league titles and more.

After winning their 30th league title in the 2019-2020 season, then Bayern CEO Karl Heinz Rummenigge confirmed an additional star would be added. He said: “The fifth star on our home jerseys is the reward for 30 league titles since the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963.

“This has been earned by many generations of players, and is proof of FC Bayern’s decades of consistency at the highest level – FC Bayern fans can be proud of that.”

Only two other clubs in Germany have more than one star on their badge (Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Möchengladbach for winning five titles each) while Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and Hamburg have a single star for winning four and three titles respectively.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will be hoping to add a seventh European title to their name and take on former manager Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side in the quarter final.
