Burnley - who sacked long-serving manager Sean Dyche on Friday - responded well after the pause in play and took the lead through Wout Weghorst in the 34th minute.
As a result of the lengthy delay, there was a minumum of nine minutes added time. However, there were further delays because the visitors were awarded a penalty, with Maxwel Cornet missing the spot-kick.
The Hammers sent their best wishes to Westwood on Twitter, saying: "Ashley Westwood is getting medical attention for a serious looking injury here. Our best wishes for him in his recovery."
