He’s still got it

Wayne Rooney rolled back the years with a fantastic late winner against Norwich City in the Sky Bet Championship’s early Saturday kick-off.

The hosts had actually enjoyed the better of the game, and were unfortunate not to go ahead when they were awarded a penalty. Finnish striker Teemu Pukki slipped on the turf and skied his penalty wide of the mark.

Rooney’s Derby side managed to withstand heavy pressure from the Canaries, and it was the former Manchester United and Everton man who netted the winner late on.

Derby were awarded a free-kick in the 87th minute, and who else but Rooney to step up and find the top corner?

Despite the quality of Rooney’s goal, it was a fortuitous three points. The win takes some of the pressure off Derby manager Philip Cocu, who has recently come under fire for the Rams’ sloppy start to the season.

Both Cocu and club captain Rooney received heavy criticism last week after Derby suffered a 4-0 home thumping by Blackburn Rovers.

If Rooney’s late winner wasn’t enough of a sucker punch for Norwich, they also look set to lose one of their star players. Todd Cantwell was left out of the matchday squad, as he nears the exit door at Carrow Road.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United look favourites to land Cantwell’s signature.

Derby were wearing their brand new pink third kit for the first time today. The club have teamed up with Umbro to promote breast cancer awareness month.

The third kit was released in support of Breast Cancer Now’s #WearItPink campaign, and Derby hope to raise significant funds through sales of the new jersey.

Five pounds from every adult kit sale will go to Breast Cancer Now, helping them to fund cancer research and support for all those affected by cancer.
