Wayne Rooney scores one of the best free-kicks of his career to keep D.C. United streak going

Pick that one out

Much has been made of D.C. United’s upturn in fortune since Wayne Rooney’s arrival.

Before Rooney made the move from Everton in the summer, D.C. were floundering at the bottom of the table and had won just 11 of their previous 49 matches.

United have since won 11 of the 18 games in which Rooney has featured, with the English legend finding the net for fun in Major League Soccer.

Rooney scored arguably his best goal since moving Stateside on Wednesday night, when he proved wrong anyone who said that the free-kick over which he stood was too far out.

The 32-year-old let rip with a scorcher of a strike and watched the net ripple for the 10th time in his 18 appearances this season.

The wonder-goal against Toronto FC was enough to secure D.C’s fourth win on the bounce, their best run in two years, and leaves the club on the brink of a playoff spot.

Rooney’s former Manchester United teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has also taken to life in MLS like a duck to water, has praised the impact of England’s top scorer.

“I think so far he did fantastic, he changed the team he came to and they have done good results,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports.

“Before he came it was different results, but he has been playing good and scoring goals and he shows that he is Rooney.

“I don’t need to describe Rooney. Everybody knows Rooney and they know his quality, so it’s only for him to play the games and perform.”
