There was never any doubt, was there?

On Robbie Keane’s final appearance for the Republic of Ireland, the captain netted his 68th international goal which drew him level with Germany legend Gerd Muller.

The 36-year-old will bid farewell to the Ireland jersey on Wednesday night after a friendly with Oman which marks his 146th appearance in the green of Ireland.

Football isn’t always romantic and things don’t always play out as they should but they did on the Aviva pitch tonight as Keane pounced on a bouncing ball, flicked it over an Oman defender and smashed it beyond the goalkeeper.

Sprint to corner flag, check. Somersault, check. Pistols, check.

Earlier eir Sport released this video of the 36-year-old striker receiving a warm welcome from the crowd at the Aviva Stadium as he makes his 146th and final Ireland appearance.

What a great player he has been for his country.

He was beaten to the first goal of the game by the ‘wrong’ Robbie – when Norwich man Robbie Brady netted an impressive free kick to out the Republic 1-0 up.

Brady stood confidently over the dead ball and breathed life into it with his wand of a left foot.

The wall didn’t jump and was sorely punished as the ball nestled in the net.
