One fan’s quick change of emotion encapsulates the heartbreak of football

From sixty to zero

Darragh Murphy

What a difference a minute makes.

It was all going in Newcastle’s favour in extra time of their EFL Cup clash with Hull on Tuesday night.

Deadlocked after 90 minutes, the Magpies would have been confident of progressing to the semi-finals after Hull striker Dieumerci Mbokani was shown red and the home team was forced to see out the remaining 30 minutes with tired legs and ten men.

A Mohamed Diame goal against his former employer eased all nerves in the KCOM Stadium as Newcastle were clearly, obviously, 100 per cent going to win.

That mentality was reflected in the chorus of “We’re going to Wembley!” that was bellowed by those in black and white after 98 minutes.

But that celebration was cut awfully short seconds later when Robert Snodgrass drew level for the Tigers.

Listen as one Newcastle supporter sums up the ups and downs of football in one heartbreaking second.

You’ll know by now that Hull went on to win the game on penalties and made this gun-jumping fan feel rather silly on his drive back to Tyneside.

As for Sunderland supporters, they rather enjoyed it all.
