Watch MLS star Giovinco score one of the goals of the summer

Right in the top corner

Tom Victor

Remember when England played Sweden at the 2006 World Cup?

Remember seeing Joe Cole find the top corner and wondering how someone so tiny could produce such power and accuracy from distance?

Well it’s happened again, only this time the goalscorer is the even tinier, even trickier, even unfulfilled potentialier (shut up, it’s a word) Sebastian Giovinco.

If you’re too young to remember Cole’s effort, or if you just have a short memory, here it is.

And now Giovinco’s.

Minus points for lack of chest control and not hitting it on the volley. Plus points for doing it from – and this is a technical term – fucking miles out.

Did he mean for it to get a nick off team-mate Tsubasa Endoh? Knowing him, probably. He’s just that good.

Even if it was accidental, only someone who really hates fun would take anything away from the Italian.

Antonio Conte left Giovinco out of his Euro 2016 squad on the grounds that anyone playing in MLS didn’t deserve to make the cut ahead of Serie A players, but he’s trying his best to prove the former Azzurri boss wrong.

It was the 29-year-old’s 12th goal of the season and his 34th in 53 appearances for Toronto since joining in January 2015. Only two other players have more than 30 in that period, and both David Villa and Kei Kamara are three behind the ‘Atomic Ant’ over the last season-and-a-half.
