Tal Ben Haim made Gigi Buffon look very stupid in last night’s World Cup qualifier

It turns out he is human

The fact that this wondergoal left Gianluigi Buffon flummoxed should tell you all you need to know about its quality.

Israel may have lost 3-1 to Italy on Monday night, but they will claim a moral victory for grabbing the goal of the game courtesy of Tal Ben Haim (no, not that one).

The Maccabi Tel-Aviv winger found the net with a sensational lob that went sailing over the legendary shot-stopper.

After a poor clearance from Giorgio Chiellini, the ball was headed straight into the path of Ben Haim who darted to the edge of the box and let fly with the outstanding strike.

The real story here isn’t the goal or the fact that Buffon was beaten though, it’s that there are two Tal Ben Haims, both of whom play for Israel and both of whom play their club football for Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Still with us? Good.

To distinguish himself from the former Chelsea, Sunderland, Manchester City, Portsmouth, West Ham, QPR and Charlton defender (yeah, he’s played for a lot of different clubs in England), the goalscoring Ben Haim adds a ‘C’ to the beginning of his surname on the back of his jersey.

Every day’s a school day.
