At least the Villarreal fans found the back of the net

Villarreal supporters trolled former footballer Jason Cundy after the talkSPORT presenter criticised the Spanish club for their performance against Liverpool in the Champions League.

The LaLiga side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s men at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane both getting on the scoresheet for the Reds.

Unai Emery’s men attempted to frustrate the home side by running the clock down from the opening few minutes, and were able to get to halftime without conceding a goal.

However, Liverpool’s class proved too much for the away side in the second-half as the Reds scored twice to take a two-goal advantage to Spain next week.

Cundy slams Villarreal

The LaLiga side – who recorded just one shot and 27 per cent possession – were criticised by some people after the match for their defensive approach to the first leg, with talkSPORT presenter Cundy slamming Emery’s side.

Cundy was scathing on talkSPORT about the performance of the Spanish outfit, claiming a Liverpool fan could’ve partnered Virgil van Dijk at the back.

The ex-Chelsea defender said: “First of all, congratulations to Liverpool. Cruise control. There’s not a world that exists right now where Villarreal can trouble Liverpool at any price.

“Liverpool were totally dominant. In some ways, it was too easy for them. I don’t know what I’ve just watched – but Villarreal are a disgrace. That is a disgrace. UEFA must be watching that and thinking, ‘we are in big trouble’.

“If that’s what’s getting to the semi-final and facing English teams… Liverpool did not get out of second gear. That Villarreal side there was like playing the last group game against a side that’s not even good enough to drop into the Europa League.

“It was shocking. Liverpool are brilliant – but that was a disgrace to the Champions League. There are players who haven’t even broken a sweat in a Champions League semi-final.

“There’s only one team that can do anything to Liverpool right now and that’s Man City, maybe Chelsea in a one-off. They are streets ahead. Villarreal were beaten before the first whistle went.

“West Ham would give them a better game. Everton gave them a better game.”

Conveniently ignoring that last weekend, Everton rocked up to Anfield, stunk the place out, and lost 2-0.

He continued: “I’ve got no idea how Villarreal have made it this far. I can’t believe what I’ve witnessed. I reckon you could’ve had a fan alongside Van Dijk tonight.

“You could’ve pulled a fan out of the stadium and said, ‘Look – it’s your lucky day, you’re going to play for Liverpool in the semi-final of the Champions League, get your kit on’. That’s how bad Villarreal were.”

Villarreal fans fire back

Following Cundy’s criticism of their club, Villarreal fans were quick to react and get their own back on the 52-year-old, hilariously changing his Wikipedia biography.

After some clever tinkering, Cundy’s new bio – albeit for a brief period only – read: “As a player, he win nothing and he says how villarreal should play when any villarreal player have more UEFA matches than him. He was a loser. He has more TV shows than trophees on his carreer (sic).”

The second leg in Spain

Villarreal welcome the Reds to Estadio de la Cerámica on Tuesday night, hoping to pull off a shock and overcome the two-goal deficit from the first leg.
