US women clinch world cup victory with halfway line screamer (Vine)

JOE

The United States were out for revenge on Japan in the Women’s World Cup final, and they got it in some style.

After losing to the same opponents in the last final four years ago, the US raced into a 4-0 lead inside 20 minutes. But it was the manner of one of the goals in particular that stood out.

Carli Lloyd was already on a hat-trick when she picked up the ball in her own half, before firing a ridiculous long-range effort over the Japanese goalkeeper from inside the centre circle.

If there’s been a better goal in a World Cup final, we haven’t seen it.
